The Unequal Burden of Inflation: A Study on Income Groups in Türkiye (2005-2023)

Abstract

Income inequality and inflation are two macroeconomic phenomena with significant impacts on economic stability and social welfare. While inflation erodes purchasing power, its effects vary across different income groups. Fixed-income individuals, particularly retirees and social transfer recipients, are more vulnerable to inflation, whereas those with capital income can more easily compensate for these losses. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for designing effective economic policies to improve income distribution. This study examines the impact of inflation on different income types in Türkiye between 2005 and 2023. The analysis is based on official inflation data and income distribution statistics published by TÜ?K. Real income calculations are used to assess the losses experienced by wage earners, retirees, social transfer recipients, and individuals earning income from real estate and financial assets. The differences among income groups are analyzed comparatively. The findings reveal that real income losses affect all groups, but fixed-income individuals experience the most significant losses. Retirees and social transfer recipients suffer the highest decline, whereas wage earners and those with capital income are relatively less affected. These results highlight the need for policy measures such as inflation-indexed pension adjustments and a more equitable taxation system on capital gains to protect vulnerable groups against inflation.
